What are the Side Effects of Metamucil

Metamucil is a very popular laxative and it has been in the market for more than 60 years.  Millions of metamucil variations are sold every year and it is one of popular over the counter drugs used by people.  Basic ingredient of metamucil is psyllium husk.  Psyllium is produced from seeds from the psyllium plant which is cultivated for its husk.  The husk of psyllium is known as Isabgol in India and it is sold by that name and it is very popular remedy for constipation in Asia also.

Other ingrediants of metamucil include gelatin, Polysorbate 80 and caramel color.  Metamucil is available in more than 15 different flavors in the market including apple, orange, cinnamon, lemonade and berries.  Usually people are not used to the taste of psyllium hence the flavors are added.  This also helps in marketing the drug to the various demographic of people who may have many likes and dislikes.

There can however be some side effects of metamucil also which you should be aware of.  Some of these may not be serious and expected while some others may be serious and your doctor or health care professional should be contacted for those side effects.

Possible Side Effects of Metamucil

The following side effects can be serious and you should take these seriously.  These symptoms can lead to complication which is why doctor should be consulted.

  • Some conditions like rashes in the skin, itching and swelling on the skin, swelling on the face, mouth and tongue.  Usually these are caused by allergy to the ingredients of metamucil.
  • Difficulty in breathing.
  • Nausea and vomiting.
  • Pain in the chest.
  • Bleeding while passing stool.
  • Not able to or difficulty swallow food.
  • Diarrhea and dehydration due to passing of too much stool especially if you have to go to the loo too many times.

Some of the side effects are not serious and usually expected though not that common.  Usually these side effects would pass away soon even if you get these problems –

  • Headache
  • Bloating in the abdomen.
  • Loose motions though not too many to make you feel dehydrated.
  • Little bit of cramps in the stomach.
